Bhādra kṛṣṇa-aṣṭamī — the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Bhādra, at midnight

Dates follow the Māyāpur (India) reckoning, the base of most published Vaiṣṇava calendars. The tradition sets each day by the tithi present at local sunrise, so your own date may fall a day earlier or later — see the calendar for your city.

The Bhāgavata places Kṛṣṇa's appearance at midnight, in the prison of Kaṁsa in Mathurā, and his immediate carrying across the Yamunā to and the household of Nanda and Yaśodā. This is the figure the whole chart is built to point at: not one more resident of the spiritual world but its centre, the person in relation to whom every other zone is arranged. communities keep the night with fasting until midnight, then celebration.
