Beginning of Cāturmāsya

Dates follow the Māyāpur (India) reckoning, the base of most published Vaiṣṇava calendars. The tradition sets each day by the tithi present at local sunrise, so your own date may fall a day earlier or later — see the calendar for your city.
Cāturmāsya is a four-month period of intensified vows kept during the rainy season and the months after. It is framed around the image of Viṣṇu's yoga-nidrā — the yogic sleep the Bhāgavata describes on the Causal Ocean, the same reclining Viṣṇu the chart shows at the boundary of the material creation. Practices vary by community and are not prescribed here; the day marks the tradition's turn inward for the season.
